...which reminds that I just got another one, this time with markings. Some of my kameraden have got a lot of them, brown, greenish, colourless.

Fantastic! Do you know where they obtained them from? Were they issued, ground dug etc.? Do you have a cover for any of them?I think it's really great to have something like that. Carried around and getting banged up and such. It would seem to be a bit of a hazard with glass acting like shrapnel.

My wild guess is that most of these glass canteens have been found in buildings, because in our (Estonian) climate the winter with all it's icing and frost in the ground would probably break the class (it even breaks the steel- the Stahlhelm for ice is a piece of cake). Even though these glasses aren't rare here in Estonia, I've never met one with cover around it.

I have read somewhere that a large quantity of German Feldflasch were made of a "Phenolic Resin" compound, (whatever that is/was!) and I believe that this is what the "wooden" ones are.
However, as usual, I am willing to be corrected by other, more knowledgable people on here.

Personally, I would be more than happy to have any of them in a display cabinet at home!

As far as I know this wood-like cover is made of bacelite.

For canteen like that you should check e-bay.de (type "feldflasche" in the searchengine and they keep coming).

Well, gentlemen, it comes out that the cover is made of pressed wood/sawdust. A man learns as long as he lives.

Sorry, one more question. Any idea 'why' they were made with glass and not some metal alloy?
