Can someone explain WW2 soviet naval infantry insignia please? I`ve noticed in various photo that some wear a (gold?) and red star on the arm but some don`t. Is this a mark of rank? Post war naval infantry wear a rope and anchor patch on the left arm where the specialist badge would be, was this ever used during WW2?

Please show what photos you refer to and we will be more than happy to explain and continue. Dimas, myself, and perhaps a few other resident members are Флот-philes...

    Thanks RichieC. Here`s some photos.

1st photo, he has a star & a stripe above the cuff. He also has an anchor patch on the left arm (I`ve not seen this in any wartime photos only post war)

2nd photo, none of these appear to have any visible insignia.

3rd photo, he has nothing on his sleeves but seems to have two stripes on his shoulders.

I know Soviet soldiers had rank marks on collar tabs and after 1943 shoulder boards and wondered if someone could enlighten me on the navy did things, since I know very little on the subject. Any info would be much appreciated.

P.S. this is my first forum post so I hope this works.

The first picture is just a Radio operator in rank of Starshina Vtoroi Stat'yi(sergeant 2second class ) , most part of the navy lost their ships and take a part in newely established Naval infantry units. Even a non Naval -infantry the Red Fleet men is the real combatant who mostly fought until their dead. The very interesting ( for me) example is Saaremaa in Hiiumaa islands and the Tallinn area ( Estonia) they was fought untill they was totally destroyed in 1941 year. But most part of infantry etc come to the German side as POWs
I don't speak about the Sevastopol and Maxim Gorky battery

The only distinct feature for Naval infantry was sleeve badge instituted in 1941. This is picture of it from the order of People's commissar of the Navy.

And people on other photo are wearing Navy uniforms? People often confusing naval rifle brigades with naval infantry.
