Default "BeVo" SS cuff titles: how to spot original from fake

Hi Guys, as this question comes up very often, I thought it would be useful to place a pinned thread on the subject?

The key to determining an original from a fake, like so many other German items, is the reverse.

Here is the edge detail of an original. Note the pattern of the weave and how it forms a series of small almost even sized white "dots" right near the edge of the cuff title? This is only seen on originals.

The chequered black and white weave which forms the back of the title is known to collectors as "salt and pepper" weave.

Now compare these two fakes. The first is modern production fake which have a series of dots and longer, taller, dashes which are very uneven in size which appear to look like this:

    .I.I.I.I.I.I.I.I.I.I.I.I.I

These are actually polyester and will fail both a black light and burn test, but they still fool a lot of people. This has the incorrect weave I describe in my previous paragraph. Look again at the edge. Click on the pic to enlarge it.

The second is the so called "bookmark" series of fakes which date from the 1970's. The reverse weave on these is totally incorrect and almost solid white with the absence of the "salt and pepper " look, never mind the edge weave. Very easy to spot.

A third fake "Bevo" title. Again the edge weave is wrong. I am sure you can all see this now

    I hope this helps?

    Cheers, Ade.
